In the age before the War of Ascension, long before the Towers themselves came to be, the skies were ruled by mighty scaled beasts known as Dragons. Apex predators of their time, they were not only powerful but wise. They foresaw their own downfall, though unsure when this will happen. Fearful of what was to come, they began to grow their numbers and expand their bloodlines, in any way they could, including staining their purity by mating with other kingdoms compatible with the dragons. This would produce weaker heirs, no doubt, but if what they had prophesied came to pass, the greater numbers would be needed. And so they continued in such manners for generations for a war that would never come. For the threat of their downfall had certainly come to pass, but by their own hand. By the age of the Towers, many of the pure blooded dragons were gone. Most of who remained made the land now known as Dragonbarrow in the Dark Continent their home, with many of their direct offspring including drakes and wyverns calling this home also. Some would find their way into the tower by some mystical means, typically being captured by groups of Tower climbers who decided they wanted the beasts as pets, or even sacrifices. This would be some of the early reasons they grew distrustful of humanity. Not to say all dragon-kind reserved themselves to Dragonbarrow, for you could often find many Wyverns and Drakes lingering throughout most of the continents. It wasn't until Alice of the Heralds decided to found a new city known as Wyveria where these lingering lizards would find a home. Here, they thought, would be a suitable place for them to continue their purpose and expand the dragon's ranks, unknowing of what this will bring.
Once the war of Ascension began, the dragons were called upon to bring their aid. This, they believed, was the prophecy they had grown weary of coming to pass. The dragons and their amassed descendants entered the tower to join the fray on the 2nd floor. And it was here they realised their error. Though the army they had spent the past centuries forging may have had great quantity, its quality was nigh existent. Their swarm of thousands were wiped away with little effort in the face of the Cursed Trio. Even several of the Pure Dragons were slain in this conflict, dwindling their numbers even further. The few who survived the encounter managed to make their way to Wyveria where possible, otherwise back to Dragonbarrow.
Wyveria became their final battleground as the end of the War was upon them. As all known witnesses had died in the battle, none are entirely certain as to what exactly transpired beyond the great, continent engulfing inferno that was witnessed leaving only the charred bones of the Heralds remained. It was thought from this that the dragons were largely extinct, their children all dead beyond the few injured in the tower.
